Blockbuster Xbox Video Games

Although Atari pioneered video games with its 1972 tennis-like simulation Pong, and the mega-hit Pac Man (released in 1981) that made it to almost every arcade and bar in the United States, the video game craze quickly faded, and no American company was willing to invest in the video game industry. This lack of vision allowed two Japanese companies, Nintendo and Sega, to dominate the genre completely. Today, video gaming is a phenomenon that people tend to get hooked on once they have begun. The worldwide sales of video games are nearly twenty billion dollars annually, with another $20 billion in hardware and peripheral sales, making the total worldwide gaming market approximately $40 billion per year, almost matching motion picture ticket sales!

Gaming is no longer restricted to children. More than sixty percent of Americans play video games, either on consoles, handheld devices or personal computers. Of those gamers, sixty-one percent are adults, forty-three percent women, and the average age is 28. A generation that grew up with video games has simply kept on playing. As gamers mature, their disposable income increases, making gaming an extraordinary lucrative market. To tap this huge market, software giant Microsoft developed a video game device - the Xbox. However, after three years since its launch, the Xbox has lost about two billion dollars for Microsoft. Consequently, Microsoft programmers have simplified its gaming software in the hopes of sparking additional Xbox video games that sell.

Despite its high-tech technology, Xbox's technological lead did not translate into a clearly superior user experience. Although the Xbox and Xbox video games are very good, they don't offer an adequately different gaming platform from existing consoles. Moreover, the technological demarcation between generations of consoles is shrinking all the time, and all three devices now on the market, the Xbox, GameCube and PlayStation 2, sport great graphics. The gaming industry has long recognized that chartbuster games generate console sales. When the Xbox was first launched, only nineteen Xbox video games were available. Although these Xbox video games were considerably more than the GameCube, they paled in contrast to PS2's more than two hundred titles.
